TOS Crew Review: Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting Manual with CD Rom, and Fix-It...Write

With all the handwriting programs out there-how is one to know which to choose from? It isn't easy, in fact-it can be down right daunting. When I first started homeschooling, I found one I really love. It is Italic based and for the most part, my kids have decent handwriting from using it. Notice, I said "most part" because with all things, folks (and that includes children) tend to morph their handwriting into their own style. That little trait tends to lend itself to some nasty looking stuff if someone doesn't rein them in. My eldest son had the most beautiful handwriting until he hit 5th grade and then, well-it turned south. I frankly wonder what happened and how I could have reversed this. My eldest daughter writes well, but sometimes I need spectacles that magnify to read it. My middle child has intertwined printing and handwriting to her own style and so-like mother like daughter-you just never know what you'll get! That leaves my baby, who luckily may be saved from this somewhat neglected issue. He is just in the throws of practicing handwriting, and now that I have the Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting program-I can set him on the road to legible handwriting for life.

Now I had never heard of this particular program, so I was very excited to receive this to review. I also requested the Fix-It...Write for the reasons listed above-we need help with our handwriting! The basic set contains a lovely, spiral bound manual with very clear and precise instructions on how to achieve this style of handwriting. Not only does it take me step by step through the process of teaching it, it offers many different ways to practice. The best part is the CD Rom you upload and use to gain teaching tips, steps for the levels and printable worksheets to practice. I love how I can move worksheet choices that fit what we are working on, into the "My Pages". It simplifies the printing process for me and anything that makes things easy-is a welcomed friend in our home.

This style is so beautiful and very easy to read-two extremely important issues when considering a handwriting program. It reminds me of Calligraphy mixed with Italic with a sprinkle of class. What is so brilliant about it is that it is easy to learn! I decided to back the bus up a tad to start my boy on the Intro Level, then I added a splash of the First Level lessons in after he had the basic strokes down. With the BFH, you can skip around a bit betwixt levels [recommended by the author] so your child will not be bored. I love the pictures that contain the basic quick strokes for practice-they capture my son's interest (and mine)and keep it. I am partial to the rooster actually, as he is quite the character. We are thoroughly enjoying the entire process, and will continue to use this until we have achieved our best handwriting.

As for the Fix-It...Write program, well here is something I need for a few of my family members-including myself. I was taught the usual style and frankly never liked it, so I tweaked it to fit me, but now I have a mixed blend of print/Italic and Classic handwriting, which when in a hurry, turns to the dreaded "chicken scratch" most cannot read-including me. The lovable part of the BFH Fix-It is how it is set up to compliment your current style, and offers two lesson sets-one using those who tend to use the Italic style more;, and for those who favor the Conventional way to write. The Fix-It program is designed to take the student (of any age), through at least 2 weeks worth of material. The end result is a lovely blend of style, and clarity that was otherwise lacking.

PRINTER ALERT

Because BFH is a print as needed program, you will have some time, and expense using your printer. One money saving solution is to print one practice sheet of whatever it is you want to work on-say, the fluency sheets and the alphabet practice sheets (one for upper and one for lower), then laminate it (not as spency as one would think, if you buy a 50 pack of sheets, they are only 20 cents each-and be sure to put 2 papers per sheet). Then once laminated, use a washable Vis-a-Vis marker on it. That way the student can practice 'til the cows come home, all the while saving trees, and your money. Once they have practiced it enough to be able to write it out nicely, offer up a couple of the pages to do in pencil. Or use lined paper-either way you are not devouring ink, and paper each time a child practices.

My son loves the laminated sheets, not only because the pen flows over it nicely; but because it is an excuse to use his mini-squirt gun (to zap it with water for erasing)...ah, boys! Gotta love em.

Product Insight

The BFH Manual comes with two different CDs-one for Windows application, and the other for MAC. You load up whichever applies, and go from there. The actual guide itself is non-consumable, so, you can use this one program for all your children. Because you have a CD Rom, you can print as much as needed, for as many students you will educate in your home.

The Fix-It...Write comes ready to pop into a 3-ring binder. You would use one per person, since this is consumable. It comes with the instructions to correct your C.S. [chicken scratch] tendencies, a supply list to complete your mission, and it even contains some practice sheets as well.

The BFH font can be purchased and down loaded onto your computer-that way you can create all sorts of documents, flashcards, extra writing sheets and so forth for your children. I am planning on using it to reinforce reading and seeing the handwriting style as often as possible.

I only have two minor complaints about this particular program. When using the CD, there appears to be no back button, so it takes a bit longer to navigate. That would be a nice addition [I have received word from the author and her computer tecs that they are considering adding that in a future revision]...as I had to go the long way around to get where I needed to be-but it is minor, so I will survive. Also, the font you download-there seems to be missing components (IE: several punctuation and additional niceties like dashes, the star and others) which make the process of producing additional resources, for the children, difficult. I want to be able to use this font to make copy work sheets, flashcards, type up Bible verses, and so forth-but with those missing pieces-I cannot always achieve the look I want. I am trying to see if I missed something there, but either way-I can still use it for many, many projects.

TOS Crew Review: Memoria Press-Prima Latina, Primary Copybook Set and New American Cursive Book

A few years back, I read The Well Trained Mind, which then spurred me on to look for a some of the products discussed within it, Latin being one. Now, we are not a Classical Education family per se, but do enjoy adding components that are typically found within the Classical domain. So my search began for a curricula that could be taught by someone with no background or experience (outside of some vocabulary words in high school science) in Latin. I also wanted a program that taught from the Christian point of view, which narrowed my choices down considerably. It was when I came across Memoria Press, that I knew I had found exactly what I needed for our studies.

When I opened our Latina Christiana, I was relieved to see that I really could teach it. It is clearly laid out, in small enough increments, to keep it from being overwhelming. The program moves along smoothly, so before the students (and teacher) realize it-they are learning Latin. I can truly attest to the benefit of including this supposed "dead language" into our studies. The results of two of our children's ACT scores; and their ability to learn another foreign language more quickly, have been positively influenced by having had completed the Latina Christiana series. Thankfully, Memoria Press now has available, a complete DVD set for the study, which guides the students through [rather independently] the course with ease. I have the Latina DVDs on my "to buy" list for my daughter to work through this coming fall. Regardless of my schedule (which often leads to not getting everything accomplished on our list) she can complete the course as planned. Which is always a good thing, in my opinion.

Before I get into the items we received to review, please note that due to space limitations; not to mention the need to save your eyes from excessive reading, I will not get into the nitty gritty of what each covers. Please be sure to click on the links at the bottom of the review for more detailed information.

When Memoria Press offered their products to us, I quickly jumped on the Prima Latina for the younger children. I have had that on my list for years, and finally my son is old enough to begin instruction in Latin. I was so excited to see that they also included the DVD set, along with the Teacher's Manual, Student Book and Pronunciation CD in our package. Prima Latina is designed like the Latina Christiana series, so I am finding the material familiar, and rather easy to teach. Each lesson provides the student with plenty of opportunity to cover material such as: vocabulary, questions to reinforce the learned material, and prayers. The one thing that concerned me prior to seeing Prima Latina, was whether it would confuse a child who is just beginning to grasp the English language, by adding a whole new set of rules and words from another one. Prima is designed to actually reinforce what they already know about English, while gently introducing new Latin material in a friendly manner. The bonus of the DVD has been such a blessing for us as well. Leigh Lowe's Southern charm, and style make listening enjoyable and fun. I am so pleased that we can begin Latin earlier (by using Prima) then continue our study (with Latina) for my youngest child; so that he will be well-equipped for whatever life experiences the Lord has in mind for him. Lastly, I strongly recommend the DVDs to enhance the study-especially if you are a bit leery of taking this on yourself. But fret not-as you have no need to worry, this series is designed to address that very issue. Simply put, you do not have to have a Latin background to teach it! And that is one of the biggest reasons the Latin series by Memoria Press is worth its weight in gold to me!

Furthermore, I have been on Memoria Press' mailing list since my first purchase, and have always enjoyed reading through the articles and product descriptions. My interest was very peaked when I saw that they developed their own Copy Book Series for elementary-aged children. These consist of three levels (K-about 3rd grade) which utilize printing as the main form of penmanship (but they do offer one which is for cursive) to train the child in the skill of copywork. These also perfectly align with Memoria Press' high standard for their materials. The student begins in book one, then works through to the third one, by copying scripture from the King James version of the Bible, and various classic poems. Each level gradually increases the amount of text they are to copy, eventually dropping the tracing or "help line" (as I call them) feature. For example: the page may have the entire verse written above the line they are to copy on to, so they can follow that-instead of constantly turning their head to see the verse on the other page. As they move along, these helps are gradually eliminated, so that they become independent from such assistance. They also left room for the child to draw what is discussed in the verse/poem. These will definitely make their way into our "save box", due to the precious artwork and penmanship my son has been etching into them. I am so relieved to see a Classical company produce material utilizing the Charlotte Mason method of copywork, which I try to incorporate frequently into our school. These Copy Books are exactly what I was looking for-no searching for verses or various material for the child to copy-it is all there, ready to go. These Copy Books save me precious time and effort; but more importantly-my son is sowing precious Bible verses into his heart while learning punctuation, vocabulary and the mechanics of the English language, to boot.

Lastly, the latest addition is the handwriting book, called The New American Cursive Handwriting Program. I was unaware of this particular style, but am intrigued by the method. One of the biggest concerns with handwriting is not so much the fine tuning of the printing, but the issue of the child having to experience the "backing up of the bus" to retrain their hand to now connect the letters in a manner, which does not resemble something written on an Etch-a-Sketch. The idea is to teach cursive right from the start (about First grade) to avoid such things. I understand the theory behind this approach, and truly feel it has merit . Being that I really favor the Italic method (the New American Handwriting is in the Conventional form most are familiar with) I am not so sure I am going to switch up this late in the game with my family. I do like the clean look, and ease with which the child learns this style though, and will recommend it to my friends who utilize the traditional form of cursive. If it is the manner of handwriting you prefer your children to learn, then I do believe you will really enjoy this latest edition to the Memoria Press line-up.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the products available from Memoria Press, and will continue to use them as I bring my final two students to the finish line in our homeschooling adventure. I have had nothing but positive experience with their friendly company. I cannot recommend them enough, to families who desire implementing some, or all of the Classical Education components into their studies.

TOS Crew Review: Write Shop Primary Book A

Write Shop Primary Book A is designed to take a young child (K-1st or 2nd grade) through eight activities per lesson set; in order to build writing skills. It is meant to be led by the parent, who is supplied with lesson plan options, helpful ideas for teaching several children at once (who have different ability levels), as well as ideas to set up an environment to spur the budding writer(s) into action. Everything is laid out in a orderly fashion, and with a just a little prep work the lessons can commence. As an additional bonus, they sell the Activity Set Worksheets containing 2 pages designed to note the student's progress called The Writing Skills Evaluation Chart , and a double-sided page to complement each lesson as well.

At the start of each lesson there is a run-down on all of the objectives and materials needed for this particular set of activities (which is a very nice feature) listed in a very user friendly way. Also, each day's discussion or writing process is then presented for you to follow through. Usually on day 6, the worksheet will come into play, highlighting the previous information learned. The book itself lays flat due to the spiral binding, so the overall design is very impressive.

That said, I have my own opinion on "teaching" writing to younger children, which may cause the audience to toss a few tomatoes up on stage, after they hear what I say about it. I really am not one to push formal writing, even if this is not as overboard as some programs can be, for this age level. I tend to veer toward narration/dictation by them to me to record (verbally telling a story), and fun activities to spur on the imagination of my children, with limited copy work and formal (hand to paper) writing. This came across a bit bookish or "schoolish" to me. Not that I could not glean valuable information from it, because I have-it is just not how I like to approach writing with young children overall. I actually used a lot of the ideas they offered up for extra writing activities, all though I edited and deleted some of the other ones because they were just irrelevant to our situation. We did the worksheets as well, and my son liked them for the most part. I wanted to mention that these are pretty typical of what a child would use if attending public school, so if you are anti-worksheet, you could simply not purchase them. Actually, these were such a small part of the program, only used to round out the lesson (so for the five dollars), I wouldn't hesitate to recommend using them.

If you are new to teaching your own, or have no idea on to how to encourage writing skills in a young child, this could be a helpful product for you. There is enough ideas listed that you can pick and choose what to do, yet not lose the essence of the program. Overall it is a decent introduction to the writing process, and could be beneficial to teaching the young child about putting their thoughts on to paper.

for us personally (I would like to give it a raft and a half actually)

for ages 5-7 but a late bloomer could benefit from it as well

Write Shop Homepage

Primary A Teacher Guide-$26.95 or e-Version $24.95 (I recommend the printed version)
Student Packet for Primary A-$4.95 or e-Version $4.50
as with any ebook, you do not pay shipping and handling and you get instantly-the student packet doesn't contain a ton of pages, so that is up to you...but the TG does, so I tend to suggest the printed version-as printing the material will still involve money and time. But again, for those who like instant access and no shipping fees, the e-version is a great option.
